Re-imagining deafness as a resource for design
نویسنده
چکیده
This contribution sets out the necessity to re-imagine the notion of deafness in order to open up the potentials of this multifaceted cultural and linguistic phenomenon for technology design. The paper challenges common normative assumptions about deafness that are derived from some audiometric hearing “norm” and therefore bound our imagination by drawing attention to inabilities, difficulties and deficiencies. Based on a literature review of cognitive studies and longterm fieldwork, a variety of benefits arising from deafness and use of sign language are discussed. As a result of this discussion I propose considering signing deaf individuals as experts in visual, spatial and embodied matters. I argue, therefore, that this perspective is especially beneficial for designing innovative technologies and thinking out of the box. To exemplify this statement a couple of concepts for inspiration that emerged from five design and development projects are depicted. I call these concepts inspiration rooms.

Re-imagining Research: A Bold Call, but Bold Enough?; Comment on “Experience of Health Leadership in Partnering with University-Based Researchers in Canada: A Call to ‘Re-Imagine’ Research”
Many articles over the last two decades have enumerated barriers to and facilitators for evidence use in health systems. Bowen et al’s article “Response to Experience of Health Leadership in Partnering with University-Based Researchers: A Call to ‘Re-imagine Research’” furthers the debate by focusing on an under-explored research area (health system design and health service organization) with ...
متن کاملResource re-allocation at network units by using of bi-level data envelopment analysis
The lack of renewable primary resources is one of the most serious challenges in recent decades. So under this circumstance, managers are looking for appropriate solutions for the optimal use of these resources to improve the efficiency of the under management units. One of the most widely used techniques in finding the optimal resource is data envelopment analysis (DEA). So in this paper, in ...
متن کاملImagining the future: evidence for a hippocampal contribution to constructive processing.
Imagining future events and remembering past events rely on a common core network, but several regions within this network--including the hippocampus--show increased activity for imagining future events compared to remembering past events. It remains unclear whether this hippocampal activity reflects processes related to the demands of constructing details retrieved across disparate episodic me...
متن کاملRe-Imagining the Future: Repetition Decreases Hippocampal Involvement in Future Simulation
Imagining or simulating future events has been shown to activate the anterior right hippocampus (RHC) more than remembering past events does. One fundamental difference between simulation and memory is that imagining future scenarios requires a more extensive constructive process than remembering past experiences does. Indeed, studies in which this constructive element is reduced or eliminated ...
